Dr. Tom Frieden

Former Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Dr. Tom Frieden is the president and CEO of Resolve, a five-year $225 million  initiative, launched in September 2017, involving 60 countries, aimed at preventing epidemics and cardiovascular disease.  Resolve is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Gates FoundationDr. Frieden is the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he led the effort to end the Ebola epidemic and worked to control the United States’  largest outbreak of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. 

As New York City Health Commissioner from 2002 to 2009, Dr. Frieden led efforts   to reduce smoking, ban artificial trans-fat from restaurants, spearhead the country’s largest community-based electronic health records project, and eliminate colon cancer screening disparities. In earlier positions he ran New York City’s tuberculosis control program and worked in India to assist in the development of a tuberculosis program that is credited with saving more than three million lives.

Dr. Frieden received medical and public health degrees from Columbia University and completed an infectious disease fellowship at Yale University. He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications.
