ABOUT THE TOPIC

India sees itself as an independent pole in the world, and seeks to be a leading power. With its location, one of the largest militaries in the world, nuclear weapons, one of the fastest economic growth rates among major countries, and the largest population in the world, the choices New Delhi makes—including vis-à-vis US-China competition—will matter. As Indians go to the polls, this discussion will explore what India wants from the world and where the US and China fit into its strategy.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tanvi Madan is a Senior Fellow in the Center for Asia Policy Studies in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. Madan’s work explores India’s role in the world and its foreign policy, focusing on India’s relations with China and the United States. In 2020, Madan wrote “Fateful Triangle: How China Shaped US-India Relations during the Cold War” (Brookings Institution Press). Her ongoing work includes a book project on the recent past, present, and future of the China-India-U.S. triangle, and a monograph on India’s foreign policy diversification strategy. Before her current post at Brookings, Madan was a Harrington doctoral fellow and teaching assistant at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. She has also worked as a research analyst at Brookings, and in the information technology industry in India. Madan has authored a number of articles about India’s foreign policy and been cited by the world’s most respected media outlets. Madan received a Ph.D. in Public Policy from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in International Relations from Yale University and a BA with Honors in History from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, India.
