ABOUT THE TOPIC
Even though Turkey is a longstanding member of NATO, its relationship with the West is fraught with tensions. Elected for the third time in the face of opposition, President Erdogan manifests autocratic tendencies as he concentrates power under Turkey's executive presidential system. He also maintains close relationships with countries that are declared enemies of democracy, most notably, Russia.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alper Coşkun is a Senior Fellow in the Europe Program and leads the Türkiye and the World Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. At Carnegie, he focuses particularly on Turkey’s foreign, defense, and security policies, and its relations with the United States and Europe. In his 32-year diplomatic career, he served as director general for International Security Affairs at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2016-2019), covering NATO, transatlantic relations, Euro-Atlantic security/defense, and arms control/disarmament matters; he was Ambassador to Baku, Azerbaijan (2012-2016); and Mr. Coşkun has held positions within the Turkish Foreign Ministry related to maritime jurisdiction affairs, counter-terrorism/intelligence, and NATO/Euro-Atlantic security matters. His foreign assignments include Turkish missions in Moscow, Athens, and the United Nations, as well as NATO, where he was the Deputy Permanent Representative. Previously, he was a faculty member of the NATO Defense College in Rome.
