ABOUT THE TOPIC
Very often, what we read in the media about the People’s Republic of China (PRC) does not give a full or accurate picture of what the leadership in the PRC is aspiring to or planning for the future in terms of its global position. There are many crucial issues between these two ambitious powers ranging from trade in food and minerals to production of exported goods, from the PRC’s developing relationship with Russia to its assumptions about the status of Taiwan. New tensions surrounding military and defense policies and the PRC’s global ambitions are fueling even further speculation about the PRC’s true global intentions and what this means for the U.S.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Christopher Johnson is president & CEO of China Strategies Group, a New York City - based political consulting company. He also serves as a senior fellow and Asian affairs specialist advising the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), the Eurasia Group and the Asia Society Policy Institute. He is a former senior analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

For two decades, Johnson worked in the U.S. government’s intelligence and foreign affairs communities, has chronicled China’s dynamic political and economic transformation, watched the development of its robust military modernization program, and reviewed China’s resurgence as a regional and global power. His analysis was crucial in shaping U.S. senior officials' understanding of and response to the decisions of the Jiang Zemin era, the transition to Hu Jintao in 2002, and the development of the new Chinese leadership under President Xi Jinping.

Johnson received his B.A.s summa cum laude in History and Political Science from the University of California, San Diego, and received his M.A. in Security Policy Studies from George Washington University. He is fluent in Mandarin.
