Affordable housing is a crisis in plain sight in New York City, in America, and around the world. It is an intricate and complex problem with massive implications for international relations. Driven by war, famine, terrorism, and poverty, people on the move are in acute need of safe, clean, and permanent homes, that they can actually afford. One of the immediate crises on the doorstep of western leaders is the re-housing of Ukrainian people – not only the refugees who are fleeing to other European countries but also the citizens who have lost their homes and yet have decided to stay.

David A. Smith, the founder and CEO of the Affordable Housing Institute (AHI), and founder and chairman of Recap Real Estate Advisors, will speak to us about solutions to global housing crises. With 45 years of experience in affordable housing in 50 countries including Ghana, Bhutan, Mexico, South Africa, India, the U.S., and East Jerusalem. Mr. Smith uniquely combines the roles of practitioner, theoretician, participant, and policymaker in the affordable housing sector. He works side by side with government institutions and private investors and developers. A 1975 Harvard graduate, Mr. Smith has authored more than 400 publications. He has received multiple awards for his work in affordable housing.
