ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Benn Steil is senior fellow and director of international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York. Dr. Steil is the founding editor of International Finance, a scholarly economics journal; the lead writer of CFR’s Geo-Graphics economics blog; and writes about global monetary policy, global imbalances, sovereign risk, and central bank currency swaps.

In his most recent book, The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War, Dr. Steil describes the story behind the beginning of the Cold War, as well as Stalin's determination to derail the Marshall Plan. The book won the New York Historical Society’s 2019 Barbara and David Zalaznick Prize for best work on American history, the American Academy of Diplomacy’s 2018 Douglas Dillon Prize, and was the Honorable Mention for the 2019 ASEEES Marshall D. Shulman Prize, and was shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize. It is ranked number three among BookAuthority’s Best Diplomacy Books of All Time.

Prior to his joining the Council in 1999, Benn Steil was director of the International Economics Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. He joined the Institute in 1992 after receiving a Lloyd's of London Tercentenary Research Fellowship at Oxford's Nuffield College, where he earned his M.Phil and D.Phil in Economics.
