It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Indyk, a respected Australian-American diplomat and foreign relations analyst, whose expertise in the Middle East greatly influenced our community.

Martin Indyk was a distinguished fellow in International Diplomacy and later served as the executive vice president at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., from 2001 to 2018. He took leave from Brookings to serve as the U.S. Special Envoy for Israeli–Palestinian Negotiations from 2013 to 2014. More recently, he was a distinguished fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Throughout his illustrious career, Indyk served twice as the United States Ambassador to Israel (1995–1997; 2000–2001) and as Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs during the Clinton Administration. He generously shared his insights with the Off The Record community, speaking at our events four times between 2003 and 2022. His presence and contributions were greatly valued, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
