ABOUT THE TOPIC
With wars continuing unabated around the world, the rise in climate-generated food crises, leaders who believe in violence as a means of settling arguments, the UN is being tested on many fronts to keep the peace. From his vantage point in the UN as a senior ambassador and diplomat, Ambassador Mythen will speak to the challenges facing the UN particularly from the perspective of his experience in Ireland which has had its own set of challenges and how Ireland’s solutions may hold lessons for other trouble spots around the world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
H.E. Ambassador Fergal Mythen is the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations. Ambassador Mythen started this post just over one year ago which also included representing Ireland on the Security Council for the final phase of its two-year term. Before this, Ambassador Mythen spent considerable periods of his career working for the Government of Ireland in support of the Northern Ireland peace process and the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. Most recently, as Director-General of the Ireland, UK and Americas Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2022, Ambassador Mythen led the department working on Northern Ireland peace process issues, Irish-British relations (including the impact of Brexit), and Irish-US and Irish-Canadian bilateral relations, as well as relations with the Latin America-Caribbean region.
Ambassador Mythen studied History and English in Trinity College, Dublin and Business Studies at the University College, Dublin.
