ABOUT THE TOPIC
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is penetrating every corner of our society from politics and education to laws governing privacy, copyright, fair use, legal interpretations, and above all, international affairs. Increasing instances of disinformation and deep fakes have us second guessing everything we read from the Soviet Union to China. Machine learning and physics are at the heart of these new capabilities and Dr. Jesse Thaler can help us to understand how this came about and, hopefully, how we can use science and physics to help us manage our new reality.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Jesse Thaler is a theoretical particle physicist and professor at the Center for Theoretical Physics at the MIT Physics Department where he started in 2010. From 2006 to 2009, he was a fellow at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Thaler fuses techniques from quantum field theory and machine learning to address outstanding questions in fundamental physics. His current research is focused on maximizing the discovery potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through new theoretical frameworks and novel data analysis techniques.
Professor Thaler received his Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University in 2006, and his Sc.B. in Math/Physics from Brown University in 2002. In 2020, Prof. Thaler became the inaugural Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) AI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions.
