About the Topic:

One likes to think that the good guys always come out on top: After they win the war, they establish peaceful lasting democracies. Unfortunately, this is not often the case. Highly violent parties are often elected and, while they prevent a descent back into war, they stay in power, stall justice, and erode democracy. How is it that perpetrators of wars win elections in peacetime? This is a question of power and force but also of psychology, history and patterns of human behavior.

About the Speaker:

There is no better person to address this topic than Dr. Sarah Z. Daly, Associate Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. Her first book, Organized Violence after Civil War: The Geography of Recruitment in Latin America, documents the transition from war to peace through interviews with militia commanders, combatants, and victims in Colombia. Her second book, Violent Victors: Why Bloodstained Parties Win Postwar Elections, examines from primary evidence how violent, wartime belligerents successfully campaign as the best providers of future societal peace. These brutal parties not only receive votes from their core supporters but also from the very people they targeted in war. Daly has been awarded many prestigious fellowships and prizes in her area of study. She received a B.A. from Stanford University (Phi Beta Kappa), an M.Sc. from London School of Economics, and Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
