ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Takako Hikotani is an adjunct senior research scholar at Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute and a professor at Gakushuin University, one of Japan’s top universities located in Tokyo. She is also a fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Tokyo, where she specializes in civil-military relations and Japanese foreign policy. Before this, Professor Hikotani was the Gerald L. Curtis Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy at Columbia University from fall 2016 to spring 2021.

Professor Hikotani has also taught at the National Defense Academy of Japan, where she was Associate Professor, and she lectured at the Ground Self Defense Force and Air Self Defense Force Staff Colleges, and the National Institute for Defense Studies. Her academic focus is civil-military relations, Japanese domestic politics, Japanese foreign policy, and comparative civil-military relations.

Among Professor Hikotani's English publications are “The Japanese Diet and defense policy-making,” International Affairs, 94:1, July, 2018 and “Trump’s Gift to Japan: Time for Tokyo to Invest in the Liberal Order,” Foreign Affairs, September/October 2017. 

Professor Hikotani received her B.A. from Keio University, M.A.s from Keio University and Stanford University, and her Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University, where she was also a President’s Fellow.
