The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than one million people worldwide and cost over $10 trillion, from both direct and indirect impacts of the disease. The world has failed this test of preparedness and response, concludes Dr. Frieden. What’s less clear, he warns, is whether the world will do better next time – because a next time is inevitable. What have been the greatest failings in the worldwide response to this virus? What are the components of a better global health architecture? And how far off is the next pandemic?
