ABOUT THE SPEAKER

General (Ret.) David H. Petraeus, a former U.S. army general, is currently a partner at the investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P., where he chairs the firm’s KKR Global Institute, which researches investment opportunities in new locations.

General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military. He first led troops into battle as commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. In January 2007, President George W. Bush appointed Petraeus to command the multinational forces in Iraq. Then, in April 2008, he was nominated to succeed Admiral William J. Fallon as head of Central Command, the organization responsible for all U.S. military operations in an area spanning 25 countries. The following year, President Barack Obama selected Petraeus to succeed Leon Panetta as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Among his many other staff and command appointments during his military service, Petraeus was chief operations officer (1995) for the United Nations mission to help establish democracy in Haiti; and he was assistant chief of staff for operations (2001–02) for the multinational Stabilization Force sent by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to enforce a cease-fire in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Petraeus graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and received an M.A. in Public Administration and a Ph.D. in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Petraeus’s honors include four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, four awards of the Legion of Merit, the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger tab, and master parachutist wings.

General Petraeus is currently a Visiting Fellow/Lecturer at Yale University, and an Honorary Professor of International Security at the University of Birmingham (UK). He serves as Co-Chairman of the Global Advisory Council of the Woodrow Wilson Center; Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the United Kingdom’s leading defense and security think tank.
