ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Alexander Cooley is the Claire Tow professor of political science at Barnard College and an adjunct faculty member at Chatham House (London). Previously, he was director of Columbia’s Harriman Institute focusing on Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe. Professor Cooley’s research has included external influences on the former Soviet states, specifically, central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as kleptocracy and extraterritorial authoritarianism. In addition to serving on advisory boards engaged with Central Asia, he has testified before Congress and the U.S. Helsinki Commission. He recently co-authored two books: Exit from Hegemony: the Unravelling of the American Global Order (2020) and Dictators Without Borders: Power and Money in Central Asia (2017). Cooley's opinion pieces have appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs. He tweets @CooleyonEurasia.
